Tarpon Springs is located 45 minutes northeast of Tampa, Florida. We were staying in Lakewood Ranch, Florida when we decided to spend the day exploring the sponge docks, shops and restaurants located in Tarpon Springs.
Greek restaurants are abundant in Tarpon Springs due to the long legacy of the Greek sponge divers who settled here in the early 1900’s. Located on the water, the Sponge Docks showcase a once booming industry.
We decided to eat at Hella’s Restaurant. We loved greek salads and gyros and of course the amazing bakery next door had baklava and other home made Greek bakery items.
The shops are cute and we wanted to come home with a few different sized sponges to use in the shower and bath. We learned that the sponges are naturally hypoallergenic and don’t grow mold unlike man-made sponges.
Tarpon Springs is a fun day trip to explore on a Saturday or Sunday with the family. We didn’t take the dolphins cruises or the water excursions. We just wanted to stroll, eat, and shop. There is a kids splash pad that is typically open when there’s not a national pandemic but we didn’t get to take advantage of this on this trip.
